ESPN details why they didn’t rank Vols 5-star signee Tristen Keys as the No. 1 WR recruit, despite his ‘advanced’ route running
2026 five-star wide receiver Tristen Keys was one of the Tennessee Vols’ biggest additions this offseason.
2026 five-star wide receiver Tristen “TK” Keys was easily one of the Tennessee Vols’ biggest additions this offseason.
Keys, a former LSU Tigers commit who flipped to Tennessee last August (partially due to Brian Kelly’s incompetence), was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 1 wide receiver in the 2026 recruiting class.
ESPN, however, has Keys ranked as the No. 2 wide receiver.
Why ESPN doesn’t have Tristen Keys ranked as their top wide receiver
ESPN’s Craig Haubert and Tom Luginbill detailed this week why they have Ohio State Buckeyes signee Chris Henry Jr ranked as the top wide receiver over Keys.
They noted that Keys is “slightly more advanced” than Henry in underneath and intermediate routes, but Henry has a rare size and speed combination.
“Receivers rarely have Henry’s combination of size and speed,” wrote Haubert and Luginbill. “Keys is slightly more advanced as an underneath and intermediate route runner, but Henry will make strides in that area, and his vertical presence is unmatched in the 2026 class.”
While ESPN has Keys ranked lower than Henry, they still had plenty of positive things to say about the Tennessee signee.
“Keys is ultracompetitive with great instincts and ball skills,” noted Haubert and Luginbill. “Although he isn’t quite as fast as Henry, Keys uses his 6-foot-3 frame and wingspan to win contested catches. He does an excellent job extending his hands from his body to make catches in the intermediate passing game before quickly transitioning upfield. Keys also has more juice after the catch in the open field than Henry. Tennessee, which needs him to be a factor right away, could line him up both outside and in the slot.”
Keys, 6-foot-2/186 lbs from Hattiesburg, MS, should have an opportunity to earn early playing time for the Volunteers as a true freshman in 2026.
