The Washington Commanders’ fanbase has been going strong for many years now and spreads across the country and beyond.

Whether you’re a newer fan or a long-time diehard, everybody knew the impact that quarterback Sonny Jurgensen had on the franchise and the NFL as a whole. We were saddened to hear the news today from his family that Jurgensen has passed away at the age of 91, and will forever be engraved in Washington history.

Washington mourns the loss of Sonny Jurgensen

The Jurgensen family released a statement today on the passing of Sonny and the legacy he leaves behind for Washington, the sport, and his family.

“It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather, Sonny Jurgensen. We are enormously proud of his amazing life and accomplishments on the field, marked not only by a golden arm, but also a fearless spirit and intellect that earned him a place among the legends in Canton. But to those of us who knew him beyond the stadium lights, he was the steady, humorous, and deeply loving heart of our family. He lived with deep appreciation for the teammates, colleagues, and friends he met along the way. While he has taken his final snap, his legacy will remain an indelible part of the city he loved and the family he built. We are comforted by the knowledge that he brought joy to so many. This weekend, as we enjoy the game that he loved so much, join us and raise a glass, share a story and a smile, as we celebrate the extraordinary life of a man who was, to us, the greatest of all time.”

Sonny Jurgensen was a Washington legend and one of the best in NFL history

To this day, Jurgensen still has a major mark on the Washington franchise, as he still holds the single-season franchise record for most passing touchdowns in a season with 31 in 1967. He’s also the only quarterback to throw for 30+ touchdowns in that same season, and it hasn’t happened since. Jurgensen was a true gun slinger during his career and held passing records for both Washington and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jurgensen was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983 and is still the only player to ever wear the No. 9 jersey in Washington. He will forever be on the Mount Rushmore for the Washington franchise, and a fan favorite for the young and old fans.
