The Nebraska Cornhuskers seem poised for a breakthrough in 2026. They have shown noticeable progress almost every season. In 2025, they earned seven wins, matching their 2024 record; however, they played half the season without starting quarterback Dylan Raiola.

To maintain momentum, head coach Matt Rhule and his staff have made strategic moves. They rank near the top of the 2027 recruiting class and have now made a hire that could accelerate development at key positions.

According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Huskers are likely to hire former Philadelphia Eagles defensive assistant Tyler Yelk. He’s supposed to be the next safeties coach, and he’s known as being one of the up-and-coming coaches in the game. This is a big hire and move by Nebraska and Matt Rhule, especially if they want to get back to being the dominant team they were a long, long time ago.

But who is Yelk? I asked Adam Holt of A to Z Sports Philadelphia who Yelk is and what he’s helped accomplish with the Eagles.

The Huskers are getting a great coach in Tyler Yelk

Yelk hasn’t been around Philadelphia too long, but his impact last season was felt. The young assistant joined the Eagles in 2023, but 2025 was his most impactful campaign so far. He was elevated to defensive assistant ahead of last season and played a hand in the development of many players in the secondary, in particular.

Young defensive backs like Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and Andrew Mukuba are just a few of the names who showed exciting upside during his tenure. Yelk’s history on the sidelines has mostly surrounded the DB room, so I’m intrigued to see how he can help the Nebraska secondary. Yelk spent time from 2013 to 2022 in college football, so he’s not new to it.

Over that stretch, he held a flurry of positions, including coaching safeties at Idaho (2022), safeties and nickel backs at Temple (2019-2021), and safeties at Northern Illinois in 2018. Northern Illinois ranked first in its conference in both scoring defense and total defense.

The pedigree is proven at the college level, and now, he’s worked with the best in the business in the pros.
