Jeffery Simmons pulls no punches when sharing his opinion on who the Titans should draft fourth overall
The Titans’ best player already knows who he wants to see drafted fourth overall.
Radio Row at the Super Bowl each year is a total zoo. The media masses and star players alike descend on the host city. And for a week, NFL sideshows of all kinds dominate the internet. If I had to sum it up with one video, it would be this video:
Tennessee Titans star DT Jeffery Simmons was in San Francisco for the week, primarily to participate in the Pro Bowl games. But then he spent some time chatting with the media, and on 104.5 The Zone’s 3HL radio show, he revealed who he is eyeing in the draft.
Jeffery Simmons calls his shot with Titans first round pick
3HL’s Dawn Davenport makes a point to ask Simmons this question each year: Who do you want to see added to your locker room this April?
Simmons didn’t hesitate to answer.
“I’ll definitely get Ruben Bain,” He said. Hopefully, we can grab him, and hopefully he’s still there, and we get ready to pick. He’s a hell of a player.”
The star Miami pass rusher most recently made waves in the college football playoffs. In four games, he tallied four sacks and eight TFLs. He and fellow draft prospect Akheem Mesidor were full-blown game wreckers on their march to the National Championship game.
Bain is one of the most undeniably talented football players in this draft class, and you could feel his impact most Saturdays. But his physical profile is a little bit awkward when you project him to the next level. Namely, his length.
He’s going to come in around 6-3, 275 pounds at the Combine later this month, but his arms are going to measure sub-31 inches. If he comes into the NFL as an EDGE and makes a Pro Bowl or All-Pro with that arm length, it would make him the first to do so since at least 1999. So there will be a big conversation about his physical tweener status.
Ask Simmons, and he’ll tell you not to worry about all that.
“He can rush the passer. He can play football. I’ve been hearing about this short arm, little hands, Cam Ward’s got small hands. Still can throw the football! He can go out there and make the crazy throws. I’m not concerned about that. I’m a Ruben Bain guy.”
Just because a player is an outlier doesn’t mean they can’t play ball. But it also doesn’t mean you should always draft them without hesitation. Teams that make a habit of banking on exceptions end up becoming bad football teams.
GM Mike Borgonzi will undoubtedly have a strong opinion on how much he weighs this length concern. But new head coach Robert Saleh will also have significant input on a player like this because having a plan for how you’ll best maximize his ability in your specific defense will be key.
The best player on the team publicly saying he’d like to have Bain’s help in the fall doesn’t hurt either.
