It will be bittersweet for Dallas Cowboys fans, but DeMarcus Lawrence just won Super Bowl LX in his first year away from America’s Team.

After joining the Seattle Seahawks last offseason, Lawrence went viral after telling a reporter he knew he wouldn’t win a Super Bowl with the Cowboys. His raising the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday is one of the biggest examples of “calling your shot” we’ve seen in recent memory.

Cowboys fans will talk about Lawrence’s words and fate for a long time, especially because he is the second DeMarcus to go on to win a Super Bowl away from the team (shoutout Ware and the Denver Broncos. However, Lawrence wasn’t the only former Cowboy who became a Super Bowl champion this weekend.

Former Cowboys coach was crucial for Seahawks

Mike Macdonald is the defensive mastermind of the Seahawks. There’s no question about it. But defensive coordinator Aden Durde, the former Cowboys DL coach, was crucial on Seattle’s path to Santa Clara.

Durde joined Macdonald in 2024 to help him build what has become the scariest defense in the league. On Super Bowl Sunday, their defense held the New England Patriots to 13 points. The Seahawks defense sacked MVP runner-up Drake Maye six times and picked him off twice.

Durde’s rise in the NFL is only beginning. This offseason, he received multiple head coaching interviews, as both the Atlanta Falcons and the Cleveland Browns considered him for the job. His path has been a remarkable one so far.

Durde started his football career in Europe, first as a player and later as a coach. In 2014, he got a coaching internship with the Cowboys, where his coaching career took off. Now, he’s got a Super Bowl ring. And even if it’s bittersweet for Dallas fans, it’s okay to feel happy for him and Lawrence.
