There will be plenty of new for the Ohio State Buckeyes offense in 2026 even if they are returning their most important players.

Julian Sayin, Jeremiah Smith, Bo Jackson, and four starters along the offensive line will be back for Ohio State in 2026. The new will come with the coaching staff that’s brought in Cortez Hankton from LSU to coach wide receivers and Arthur Smith from the NFL to be the new offensive coordinator

Ryan Day isn’t quite done yet with new additions to the offensive coaching staff, however.

Ohio State has a new offensive coaching staff addition

According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, the Buckeyes are hiring Samford quarterbacks coach Thomas Morton as an assistant tight ends coach. Morton is noted as an up-and-coming offensive mind in college football who played quarterback at Southern Miss. Morton will work under tight ends coach Keenan Bailey.

Morton spent the 2025 season with Samford and before then he was an offensive analyst at Auburn for one season. Morton has additional experience as an offensive analyst at Troy.

Ohio State is bringing in Morton to replace Wendy Laurent, who left Ohio State to become the tight ends coach at Old Dominion.

In terms of significant chances to the Ohio State coaching staff, there should be no more of that. Defensive coordinator Matt Patricia looks poised to return for another season in Columbus after rumors that he could go back to the NFL.

Morton’s addition to Columbus might seem minimal now. But it wouldn’t surprise me if the Day developed Morton on the Ohio State coaching staff over the next few years into a bigger role.
