The Commanders are in the market for a top WR this offseason, and signing recently released Tyreek Hill would be a massive mistake.

The 2026 NFL offseason is in full swing, and teams are wasting no time making drastic changes to their rosters.

The NFL free agency tampering window opens on March 9th, and teams will have difficult decisions to make until then. The Washington Commanders have a handful of their own with 32 pending free agents this offseason.

The Commanders need to make upgrades at several positions, and they’ll be linked to one big name who would fill a need, but not the upgrade they need.

The Commanders will be linked to new free agent WR Tyreek Hill

The Miami Dolphins are cleaning house and starting a new era by releasing two high-profile names in OLB Bradley Chubb and WR Tyreek Hill. The Commanders could be linked to Chubb since they need a pass rusher, but they’re already a popular name as a destination for Hill for many reasons.

Hill is going to be looking for three factors when deciding where he wants to go, and the Commanders have all three. Expect Hill to look for a team with a top quarterback, a lot of salary cap space, and the ability to compete. The Commanders have Jayden Daniels, the top-5 salary cap in the NFL, and were a season removed from the NFC Championship.

Just because they’re a good fit, it doesn’t mean the Commanders should make an offer to Hill, and he actually goes against what they’re looking for.

Why the Commanders need to steer clear of Tyreek Hill this offseason

The Commanders need to add another weapon for Daniels, opposite of Terry McLaurin, but McLaurin will be 31 this season, and Hill is turning 32 in March. General manager Adam Peters said they need to get younger and faster, and Hill would be the opposite of that.

Yes, Hill is one of the fastest players in the league, but he’s also recovering from a brutal knee dislocation and ACL tear he suffered at the end of September, and still has a long rehab ahead. The Commanders can’t afford to take a roll of the dice on someone like Hill, who will probably never be the same when he starts playing again.

They need to find their next wide receiver option for the future, as well as an immediate impact for 2026. Carnell Tate, Jordyn Tyson, or Makai Lemon could all be options with the No. 7 overall pick, or they can swing on Romeo Doubs in free agency. The Commanders will also be the heavy favorites to land Brandon Aiyuk, who comes at a more team-friendly deal, and the best option for this offseason.

Hill shouldn’t be anywhere on the Commanders’ radar, and he’ll likely go back to the Kansas City Chiefs or join the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, or another contending team.
