We’ve reached the cap casualty part of the offseason. The Miami Dolphins got things going on Monday when they released four players, including Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb. More teams are going to be releasing guys in the next couple of weeks before free agency opens up on March 11th.

These guys do not have to wait until then; they’re free agents the moment that release happens, and the Detroit Lions could potentially swoop in and grab one or two of them. I’ve made a list of some of the potential cap casualties out there who would best fit Detroit.

Edge Bryce Huff

We know the Lions need some edge help, but they don’t need to go out and sign the most expensive guys. They should really be looking at the draft more than anything. But Huff represents the chance for some younger depth. He’s coming off a decent season with the 49ers, but they can clear some cash by cutting him. The Athletics’ Matt Barrows has him listed as one of the 49ers’ biggest cut candidates.

QB Jacoby Brissett

We’ve already mentioned Brissett as a possible option for the Lions. He would be a premium backup quarterback who can come in and keep the Lions going if anything happens to Jared Goff. You could also see the potential of some Taysom Hill-type stuff with him as well.

C Hjalte Froholdt

Another guy we’ve brought up before. Froholdt, who just spent three years with Drew Petzing in Arizona and was with him in Cleveland, would be an ideal addition to the Lions’ offensive line. He can be a starting center right away while Detroit drafts a guy and develops him to take over. It’s plug-and-play in Petzing’s offense, too. It’s just going to depend on whether or not the Cardinals feel they can let him go.

OL Elgton Jenkins

Here’s an interesting one brought up by Packers beat writer Matt Schneidman. The Packers can clear up $19.5 million in cap space by cutting Jenkins. In Detroit, he could play a similar role to Froholdt. He can be a veteran center, like he was in Green Bay in 2025, while the Lions develop that young backup. Another even better scenario is that he plays his natural left guard for the Lions while they bring along Christian Mahogany and Miles Fraizer.

DT A’Shawn Robinson

A familiar name for sure. Robinson has been a good player since leaving Detroit, and he notched 5.5 sacks for the Panthers this year. He’s also very good against the run. He fits Detroit more now than he did when he was first here. If the Panthers cut him, they can save $10.5 million. The Lions could get him for a steal and really strengthen their defensive line depth.
