Shavon Revel Jr. played in 30% of the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive snaps in 2025. And he’s still one of the most important players on the roster today.

The reason is simple: With DaRon Bland undergoing foot surgery in consecutive years, the Cowboys are going to need him to step up. Though the front office will likely add cornerbacks in the offseason—through free agency or the NFL Draft—Revel is currently the only true option to start on the roster.

Other corners under contract include Trikweze Bridges, Caelen Carson, and… Nope, that’s it. The good news? Christian Parker, the new Cowboys defensive coordinator, sounds like a fan of Revel Jr.

Cowboys DC on Shavon Revel Jr.

During his introductory press conference on Wednesday, Parker admitted he evaluated Revel Jr. when he was a Draft prospect last year.

“I definitely evaluated Revel last year in the draft process,” Parker said. “Had one of his teammates at Denver, Ja’Quan McMillan from ECU, so kind of had a little bit of intel there. But (Revel’s) ability to erase receivers in press coverage, he’s very aggressive in run support, and he has the long speed and athletic traits that you want at the position.”

Even after playing seven games as a rookie and starting five, however, Parker knows the priority with Revel Jr. is getting healthy.

“Obviously coming off the injury, getting him healthy is a significant part of that and him having the confidence to do so,” Parker added.

Revel Jr. should be relieved to hear the new defensive coordinator be so high on him. After an up-and-down rookie year, it’s important Parker showed confidence in him. And it suggests he’s squarely in the mix to compete for a starting role.

Parker is known as a CB guru

Revel Jr. should be excited to work with Parker as much as the coach is to work with him. After all, the new Cowboys DC specializes in defensive backs. And his resume has earned him a strong reputation as a cornerback guru.

At Denver, Parker coached Patrick Surtain II to an All-Pro season in his second year in the NFL. He replicated such feat in Philadelphia with both Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell. Doing something similar with Revel Jr. would be a game-changer for the Cowboys defense.

As a rookie, Revel Jr. struggled to be consistent in coverage and was a mediocre tackle. But that was after his knee injury kept him out of the entire offseason program only to play in the second half of the season. A full year of preparation and a healthier knee should yield superior play.

Despite the Year 1 struggles, Revel Jr. showed flashes of his signature sticky coverage that made the NFL world consider him a first-round talent before the injury.

There is a lot Parker needs to fix to take the Cowboys’ terrible 2025 defense and transform it into a competitive unit. Some of it, particularly player acquisition, is outside of his control. Developing Revel Jr. isn’t. Let’s see how it goes.
