Commanders named top fit for future Hall of Fame receiver that will immediately make Jayden Daniels better

The Commanders need to give Jayden Daniels more weapons this offseason, and one 2026 NFL free agent shouldn’t be overlooked.

The Washington Commanders are entering a crucial offseason in which they need to rebuild their roster and add top talent.

This isn’t the deepest free agency group, and there are limited options this offseason, so the Commanders may need to pivot to other options. Quarterback Jayden Daniels needs more weapons on offense next season, and it’s unlikely that someone of the caliber of Alec Pierce or George Pickens even hit the market.

Our A to Z sports team did a collab article on the top free agent wide receivers this offseason, and the Commanders were considered a top fit for veteran WR Mike Evans.

Should the Commanders consider Mike Evans?

The Commanders need to attack free agency with a plan, but also not spend the majority of their cap space on one or two big names. They’ll obviously be linked to WR Brandon Aiyuk whenever he gets released, but they also have a short supply of options with Romeo Doubs, Jalen Nailor, and Jauan Jennings leading the way.

There’s no guarantee that the Commanders can land any of those and have to pivot to Evans instead. Evans unfortunately snapped his 11-season 1,000-yard streak in 2025 due to injuries, but who says he can’t return to form in 2026?

Evans said that he’s ready to play in 2026 at 32 years old, and despite the Commanders wanting to get younger and faster, he should definitely be under consideration instead of being stuck with Chris Moore and Noah Brown again.

Why the Commanders should target Mike Evans

Evans won’t be a popular pick among fans, but his playing style could fit the Commanders’ offense and give Daniels a true outside weapon to complement Terry McLaurin. I asked A to Z Sports Tampa Bay writer Evan Winter why Evans would be a fit.

“Mike Evans would immediately boost the Commanders’ passing attack by giving Jayden Daniels two legit No. 1 options at wideout. It doesn’t matter if he and McLaurin are “X” receivers, either, because they can line up in the slot when it makes sense. There are plenty of ways to get them both on the field at the same time.”

Deebo Samuel is a good player, but he’s more of a matchup than a receiver. He can’t just line up and beat the guys across from him as Evans can, and the latter can still play at a high level; it’s just the injuries he suffered last year that raise questions. Adding that element to the equation would elevate Daniels’ game, without question.”

“Evans would also give the commanders the big-bodied receiver they haven’t had in the Daniels era. And, he’d boost what was already one of the NFL’s best red zone offenses. It just makes too much sense if Evans ends up deciding to play elsewhere.” – Evan Winter, A to Z Sports Tampa Bay

The Commanders could sign Evans to a one or two-year deal worth $15-$18 million per year, which he’s projected to earn, and still draft another younger option to develop for the future. General manager Adam Peters needs to make some splashes where he can, and fans shouldn’t rule out Evans.
