The Cleveland Browns have a crucial offseason ahead of them. Hiring Todd Monken to be the new head coach was one piece of the puzzle, the Browns turn all focus to bettering the roster.

Cleveland has free agency, the NFL draft, and the trade market to better the team. General manager Andrew Berry has never been shy about making trades, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Browns made one or two.

ESPN proposes a trade sending Eagles WR A.J. Brown to Cleveland

ESPN had a trade idea where the Browns would get a lot better on offense. The proposal was the Browns sending their first-round pick from the Jacksonville Jaguars (No. 24 overall) to the Eagles in exchange for WR A.J. Brown.

Browns general manager Andrew Berry is an ex-Eagles exec who has a rapport with Roseman. Cleveland has a penchant for the splash receiver trade, acquiring Odell Beckham Jr., Amari Cooper, and Jerry Jeudy during Berry’s tenure. All three players posted 1,000-yard seasons in Year 1 with the Browns.

Cleveland would still have their own first-round pick at No. 6 overall and would likely need to take an offensive lineman there. The Browns trading a first-round pick for a player who went over 1,000 yards receiving in six of his first seven years is a great idea on paper, but it’s not likely to happen.

Why the Browns won’t trade for A.J. Brown

Cleveland is putting an emphasis on getting younger on offense this year, which is why we’re not seeing guys like RG Wyatt Teller and TE David Njoku return. Brown will be turning 29 in a couple of months and his best football will soon be behind him. Trading for a player approaching the back half of their career, even if they’re still productive, goes against what the Browns should be doing.

Brown brings the diva mentality many wide receivers do and he’s going to be vocal if he’s not getting the ball. We all watched how the Odell Beckham Jr. trade worked out for the Browns, it didn’t.

The Browns need to build the wide receiver position through the draft and they can work on doing just that by faking a player like Ohio State WR Carnell Tate or USC WR Makai Lemon.

From a pure talent standpoint, the Browns would get a lot better by adding a player to the degree of Brown. It’s everything else coming with it that the Browns don’t need. Trading for an aging wide receiver who could become a locker room issue isn’t the way to go.
