The Ohio State Buckeyes had a major shift with their roster when the transfer portal opened in the month of January.

North of 30 players, mostly back-end of the roster depth, left the program via the portal. Ohio State brought about half of that back in from the portal.

The transfer portal is a major part of roster building now. It’s sort of picked up quickly the last few years and everyone’s not supportive of how it currently works, including a former Ohio State head coach.

Urban Meyer makes a major statement on transfer rule in college football

“Non-graduate athletes should only be allowed to transfer once for free. There’s a big push on campus to be a one-time exempt so you can transfer one time. I’d add, though, that graduate students should also be exempt.”

And then you, when the coach leaves, as I said to you earlier. I just think that’s too many exceptions. You get one, Mark, where you’re without penalty. Next, if you leave another time, then that’s a sit out for a year.”

There’s not a whole lot of rules around transferring right now and we all saw the free-for-all take place in January. Up until this year, it took place twice with two transfer portals. Ohio State has had some big additions from the portal with players like Caleb Downs, Quinton Judkins, Will Howard, and Josh Simmons to name a few.

Meyer was out of coaching in college before the portal picked up the way it is now. The times of players having to sit out after transferring are over and we’re seeing guys play for three and four schools. Cam Calhoun is playing for his fourth school with Ohio State and S Earl Little Jr. will be playing for his third. Both are recent pickups for the Buckeyes via the portal.

At some point, it feels like some guidance has to come on this era of college football including the transfer portal and NIL Most of us, including Meyer, would like to see it.
