There goes that idea

As we all know, the Detroit Lions are in deep need of a center, and Lions general manager Brad Holmes said the Lions will be on the lookout for one via free agency, trade, or the draft.

Well, the very best option for the Lions may have just come off their list.

The Ravens have offered the Lions’ top option at center, Tyler Linderbaum, a “market-setting contract”

The market for Linderbaum is expected to be a big one. Just last week, in the annual conference call with NFL insider Daniel Jeremiah, he said that he wished he were Linderbaum’s agent because the market is going to be so big. But, as we’ve mentioned a few times, Linderbaum is probably not going to make it to the market.

That market setting deal is not known at the moment, but here’s what we know about the current market leader. Chiefs center Creed Humphrey signed a $72 million deal with an AAV of $18 million. So you can believe that Linderbaum is going to hit $20 million a year and probably $80 million. The Lions could theoretically afford that if they were to do some of the cap-clearing ideas they’re able to do, but the reality is, they’ll probably never get the chance.

That doesn’t mean the Lions are totally screwed; it just means they won’t get the best option. There are still options in free agency, like Cade Mays or Connor McGovern. There are options in the trade market, like Hjalte Froholdt or Joe Tippmann. Then there’s the draft with guys like Jake Slaughter or Logan Jones. They also have the option to move Tate Ratledge to center. Something that’s been openly discussed by the Lions.

We’ll see what happens.
