Tennessee Vols true freshman Faizon Brandon will compete for the starting quarterback job on Rocky Top this spring and fall.

Brandon, a former five-star recruit from Greensboro, NC, will compete with redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and Colorado Buffaloes transfer Ryan Staub for the job.

MacIntyre is viewed as the favorite to win the job, but Brandon certainly can’t be ruled out in this battle. The North Carolina native is an elite talent who led his high school, Grimsley, to back-to-back state championships.

Vols insider details the trait that made him fall in love with Faizon Brandon

VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs joined WNML’s SportsTalk Tuesday and shared some thoughts on Tennessee’s three scholarship quarterbacks.

Hubbs specifically pointed out the traits that have impressed him about MacIntyre and Brandon, noting MacIntyre’s ability to process quickly and Brandon’s elite accuracy.

“I think the best thing MacIntyre did last fall when we were watching was he processed quickly,” said Hubbs. “I think physically, he had some things to develop on. And they were trying to speed up his release a little bit, and all of those things. But in terms of knowing where to go and quickly processing, I think George did a really good job of that.

“The thing that I fell in love with with Faizon Brandon when he camped at Tennessee in back to back years is I thought he was extremely accurate. You can’t read at a camp setting what [a player’s] processing is and all of those types of things, because you’re playing one on one, that type of thing. But I thought he was extremely accurate with the ball — both on the move and in the pocket. So I was impressed there.”

“Staub is a guy who has played a little bit,” continued Hubbs. “I don’t know enough about him to know exactly what [his] strength is. I know he can run around a little bit, and he’s got some experience. But I think everybody believes this is a MacIntyre vs Brandon competition going into spring practice. And I think for George, it’s about where is he at physically, and how does he play? And I think for Faizon, it’s how quickly can he learn things mentally, and really put himself dead in the middle of this competition — not just now, but all the way through the summer and into August. So, it should be fun to watch.”

(It’s worth noting that ESPN analyst Greg McElroy praised MacIntyre’s accuracy this week, too.)

Spring practice is set to begin March 16 for the Vols. From there, it’ll be game on in this quarterback competition.
