Newest Los Angeles Rams coaching staff move only adds more fuel to the fire surrounding major trade storyline
The Los Angeles Rams might have just taken a big step to adding Trent McDuffie.
This offseason, the Los Angeles Rams have been repeatedly linked as a prime trade candidate for Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie. The Rams desperately need to fix their cornerback room, and they have the cap space to absorb the contract extension that McDuffie will warrant.
Their latest coaching staff move will only add just more fuel to the fire of such a deal happening in the future, and gives the Rams another key link to getting McDuffie to Los Angeles.
Trent McDuffie has one more link to the Rams
The Rams surprised many when they promoted Jimmy Lake to the full time defensive backs coach/defensive passing game coordinator role, seemingly booting out former associate head coach and defensive backs coach Aubrey Pleasant with little fanfare.
Lake has been a renowned defensive backs coach over his career, particularly with the Washington Huskies, where he recruited and developed a slew of NFL Draft prospects who have gone on to carve out strong career at the next level. One of those Huskies was McDuffie himself. In fact, Lake served as McDuffie’s primary recruiter, and their relationship was a key reason why McDuffie committed to Washington in the first place.
While I doubt the Rams promoted Lake solely for the purpose of landing McDuffie, it certainly helps their odds in pulling McDuffie to Los Angeles. If the chance to add McDuffie comes up, the Rams shouldn’t hesitate to pursue him, and any advantage they can have they should grasp in their pursuit of landing the elite cornerback.
McDuffie will continue to feature prominently in trade discussions, and the Rams will remain in that conversation until something changes. Their need at cornerback is simply too great to ignore a chance like this, and they have another key advantage linking the two sides together to help a deal get done here.
