There won’t be any shortage of suitors for Trent Williams if he walks away from the San Francisco 49ers
If Trent Williams walks in free agency, what teams make the most sense?
The San Francisco 49ers are in a tricky place with future Hall of Famer left tackle Trent Williams. The two sides have to agree to deal this offseason, or else Williams will walk, leaving a massive void behind that the 49ers aren’t in a position to easily fill.
If Williams decides enough is enough or the 49ers refuse to meet his demands, Williams will enter free agency as the most talented offensive lineman to become available in years. What teams immediately stand out as potential free agents for the star tackle?
Trent Williams free agency fits
Chicago Bears
Ozzy Trapilo and Theo Benedet bounced back and forth at left tackle for the Bears this season, with neither one seemingly locking down the role. Trapilo had some encouraging reps towards the end of the season, but his injury suggests he won’t return any time soon next season. Locking down their blindside is a must for Caleb Williams. With the Bears still looking like a contender, it makes sense for Trent Williams to be interested in finishing out his career up north.
Where this gets tricky is making his cap work. The Bears are in a messy cap situation without much wiggle room to make such a deal work. However, the cap can be solved if they want to make this work.
Green Bay Packers
The Packers seemingly want former first-round pick Jordan Morgan to fit over at left tackle, and that’s not a move I would endorse. They have the cap space and maneuverability to figure out a deal for Trent if they want to, and they have a clear and obvious need at the most important spot. However, they have a slew of needs to address in free agency and have some extensions to start thinking about in the near future.
Still, with them being a contender, it’s worth monitoring their status here if they want to go all in and right the ship.
Houston Texans
The Texans, like most contenders, are fairly strapped for cap space, but they have the ability to create room with their upcoming release of Joe Mixon and a few restructures here and there. If they want to get serious about fully revamping the offensive line, adding Trent Williams over at left tackle would solve their most important position on the offensive line.
They have to get a full picture on C.J. Stroud this season, so solving as many needs as they can before the season would go a long way in getting to that point.
Los Angeles Rams
Just hear me out on this one. Left tackle Alaric Jackson has struggled with blood clots, and his play on the field hasn’t completely matched the investment the Rams have put into him, leading the Rams in pressures and sacks allowed.
The Rams are going “all in” on this season with Stafford, and they have all the cap space in the world to make a deal happen if they so choose to. It’d be a massive investment with Jackson still owed plenty of money, but we’re talking entirely different stratospheres of players here.
