The NFL is a relentless beast for coaches, players, and front office members. The transition from college football to the pros is a tough one, but it is sometimes made easier for young athletes when they are able to play in front of their hometown in the NFL.

Will Clapp is a name that Saints and LSU fans have learned quite well over the past decade. He made an important announcement this week.

Will Clapp announces retirement from NFL

The former LSU lineman and NFL veteran has announced he is hanging up his cleats. The New Orleans native spent 2018-2021 with the Saints before joining the Los Angeles Chargers. Clapp played for the Buffalo Bills in 2024.

Clapp suffered a severe Lisfranc injury in the preseason last year after joining the Saints for the second time in his playing career. That ended what would be his final year on the gridiron. Now, he’s ready for the next chapter of his life.

Saints quarterback Tyler Shough spent just one season with Clapp in New Orleans, but the veteran lineman clearly made an impact on him. Shough commented on his retirement post.

Clapp could replace Jahri Evans as OL assistant on Saints staff

Jahri Evans exited the Saints coaching staff earlier this offseason to join Mike McCarthy’s group with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is an assistant offensive line coach with Pittsburgh, after holding an assistant role in New Orleans over the past three seasons.

Evans began as a Saints coaching intern in 2022, a handful of years after retiring from the NFL. A Super Bowl champ with the Saints, Evans quickly ascended the coaching ranks and clearly made an impact on McCarthy’s veteran coaching mind.

Maybe – Clapp will become the next former Saints player to join their coaching staff under Kellen Moore.

It would make plenty of sense if he’d like to remain involved with the organization that valued his ability and presence on the roster during his playing career.

Only time will tell, though. Regardless, Clapp will always be appreciated by multiple Louisiana fan bases.
