Commanders’ risk of losing top pending free agent skyrockets after latest NFL report gauges his market
The Commanders are expected to lose their top pending free agent, with his market appearing to be much stronger heading into NFL free agency.
The Washington Commanders are heading into a critical part of the offseason with free agency just a week away.
They’re expected to be active, finally, but they also have to decide what to do with their own 31 free agents. General manager Adam Peters already made the shocking move to release starting center Tyler Biadasz, but now there’s another big question mark on the offensive line.
One NFL insider says that Commanders starting left guard Chris Paul is a major sleeper in free agency, and his market may be too strong for them to re-sign.
Commanders left guard Chris Paul is listed as a free agency sleeper this offseason
This free agency group isn’t filled with the biggest names this offseason, but some quality players will be available, and a handful of sleepers with a bigger market than expected. Unfortunately for the Commanders, starting left guard Chris Paul is one of those players, and he might be well out of Washington’s market to re-sign him next week.
NFL insider Jeremy Fowler lists Paul as a sleeper in free agency because of how great he played in his 15 starts last season, and he might be out of Washington because of it. Paul plays a premium position that teams covet in the offseason, and free agency contracts are expected to be heavily inflated anyway after another salary cap boost.
The Commanders already invested a lot of money in right guard Sam Cosmi, and they’re actively working on an extension for franchise left tackle Laremy Tunsil as well. I don’t see them overpaying Paul after one good season at left guard, and people will be surprised by how much he makes this offseason. The Commanders do need to replace him if they lose him, however.
The Commanders need a plan to replace Chris Paul this offseason
The roster changes have just started for the Commanders, but they’ve already made three moves that could help them replace Paul after extending both Andrew Wylie and Nick Allegretti before free agency. Both can play left guard as depth at worst, and the Commanders can still add competition to start in free agency or the NFL draft.
I had the Commanders selecting Iowa left guard Beau Stephens with the No. 186 overall pick in my latest mock draft, and there will be plenty of options on the market as well. The Detroit Lions just released Graham Glasgow, who played in the same scheme David Blough will be running next season, and he’s just one of many.

The Washington Commanders may have a much better chance of landing superstar Maxx Crosby than it initially appeared
The Commanders have the highest odds to trade for All-Pro EDGE Maxx Crosby this offseason, which is expected to happen soon if it actually happens.
