A Maxx Crosby trade could be hitting the NFL news cycle very soon, according to one NFL insider. And it may just involve the Dallas Cowboys.

The star defender from the Las Vegs Raiders has been a name to watch all offseason and with free agency around the corner, things may heat up any second. Let’s break down the latest information, and look at if the Cowboys make sense or not.

Cowboys keeping tabs on Crosby

NFL insider Albert Breer put together a column listing his takeaways from combine week, and there are three big items regarding a potential Cowboys trade for Crosby.

  • Crosby trade could happen this week: Breer said he leans toward the star pass rusher being traded, and added “maybe this week.”
  • Cowboys in the mix: Breer noted Dallas as one of the many teams that are “keeping tabs.” He also listed the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, and the Los Angeles Rams.
  • The bare minimum: Breer’s “sense is they’ll at least kick the tires on Crosby.”

What would Crosby cost?

According to multiple reports from earlier in the offseason, the Raiders won’t consider dealing Crosby unless it’s a haul similar to the Micah Parsons trade. The Cowboys received two first-round picks and Pro Bowl DT Kenny Clark.

Will he actually cost that much? Maybe not, but with so many teams expected to be involved in the sweepstakes, the compensation could quickly get out of control.

Going against the Raiders is the fact that Crosby will be 29 years old when the season begins and has had two surgeries in the last two offseasons.

Should Jerry Jones do it?

Obviously, it depends on the trade compensation. But if the Cowboys can get away with only giving up one first-round pick, I could see this making sense.

Dallas’ defense isn’t one player away. But adding a star pass rusher like Crosby next to All-Pro DT Quinnen Williams immediately makes this defensive line a scary one. Pass protection would suddenly become a nightmare for opposing offenses.

With a high-powered offense led by Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and George Pickens (who was franchise tagged last week), building an above average defense should be enough to turn this team into a Super Bowl contender.

There’s not one move the Cowboys can make that gets them closer to that mark than acquiring Crosby.

Ultimately, I think the bidding war will lead to the Cowboys losing out on the sweepstakes. But if they’re involved, there’s always a chance. Now we wait.
