Commanders’ latest move leaves door wide open for frustrating position before free agency begins
The Commanders looked to have an answer at the kicker position, finally, but there may be doubt after their latest move before NFL free agency.
The Washington Commanders are planning to shake up the roster this offseason, and they’ve already made difficult decisions on key players that weren’t expected.
The Commanders shocked everyone by releasing starting center Tyler Biadasz, and that was just the first domino to fall. General manager Adam Peters has 31 pending free agents who can test the market next week, and some will be on their way out.
The Commanders added another free agent to the board after deciding not to tender kicker Jake Moody as a restricted free agent.
The Commanders are letting kicker Jake Moody become a free agent
Peters has to improve a lot of positions on the roster, and kicker could once again become a need with Moody hitting the market as a free agent, according to reports.
Moody joined the Commanders late in the season last year after their struggles continued with Matt Gay. He actually played well and made big kicks when he needed to, and looked to finally be the Commanders’ answer at kicker. Moody went 10 for 11 for the Commanders, including a 56-yard kick, which averages at almost 91% success rate.
Now, the Commanders could circle back and check under every stone to find their answer at kicker, and Moody could also still return.
The Commanders’ options at kicker this offseason
The door is still open for Moody to return to the Commanders since he’s now just a normal free agent, but they could also replace him before that even happens. Eddy Piñero is the top free agent kicker who could hit the market, and Peters could steal another San Francisco 49ers kicker this offseason.
Chad Ryland is a younger option on the market at 26 years old, and not just another stopgap at kicker. The Commanders could also sign an undrafted kicker after the NFL Draft, and pay the highest price to Trey Smack from Florida, or Dominic Zvada from Michigan.
The Commanders need more than one option, and actually have a kicking competition this offseason, which they refused to do last training camp. That decision turned out to hurt them in the long run, and now the Commanders have to finally get the position right with Moody hitting the free agency market.
