Breece Hall sends a strong message to the Jets front office after they decide to franchise tag him ahead of the deadline
Breece Hall shared his true feelings about the Jets’ decision to franchise tag him.
The New York Jets decided on Tuesday to place the franchise tag on running back Breece Hall. While it wasn’t a surprise, the tag is something no player ever wants, especially when seeking their second contract.
Hall, a 2022 second-rounder, has reached the end of his four-year rookie deal and was looking to hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent. With an RB class that is shallow in the NFL Draft, there was a chance that Hall made some very good money in free agency, but that chance is now gone, and Hall is letting everyone know how he feels about that.
Breece Hall sends a message after the Jets franchise-tag him
“Always been the type to bet on myself. Been working…see y’all soon, Love,” posted Hall on his Twitter-X account shortly after the news.
The problem here is the delay of the second contract. In the NFL, every agent and every financial advisor is trying to find clients who can earn second and third contracts in the league. The rookie wage scale is not as hefty as it once was, and as the rounds go on, the money begins to decrease drastically.
For some positions, the franchise tag can be a lucrative payday. Take George Pickens and the Dallas Cowboys. While he also wants long-term security, he would earn nearly $28 million for the 2026 season. Hall? Nearly half as much at $14 million.
The other problem is that the longer a team waits to pay a running back long-term money, the less likely that running back is to receive a long-term extension. Most teams have an age cap when it comes to players. Due to the wear and tear of the position, running backs tend to age out faster in the league. Some teams won’t sign free agents past the age of 28.
Hall turns 25 in May, which means that if he’s a free agent again next year, the longest deal some teams will give him is a two-year contract. So the tag is certainly pro-team and anti-player, and Hall isn’t afraid to let everyone know that.
