Abdul Carter’s latest announcement creates another mystery for Giants fans to wonder about ahead of NFL free agency
He is changing his jersey number once again.
Jersey numbers are always an entertaining offseason topic. For New York Giants EDGE rusher Abdul Carter, he is going to have a new look for his sophomore campaign in red and blue next season and possibly beyond.
Abdul Carter announces he will wear a new number next season
According to the young pass rusher himself, Carter is set to move on from jersey number 51. He did not reveal which number he will swap to for next season.
The revelation from the former first-round pick was in response to a social media post from the Giants’ Twitter/X account which included a picture of Carter captioned, “51 days until we pick again,” pointing to the 2026 NFL draft.
Carter’s jersey number has been a hot topic before, even though he has played just one season in the pros. Carter wanted to wear the retired No. 56 jersey for New York when he was first drafted. That number was last worn by the legendary Lawrence Taylor, and he didn’t allow it to happen.
“I know he would love to wear that number, but hey, I think it’s retired,” Taylor told The Post’s Steve Serby at the time. “Get another number, I don’t care if it’s double zero, and then make it famous.”

That wasn’t the only intrigue with his jersey number, though. No. 11 was the next one to be on the table because Phil Simms was going to allow it to be unretired for Carter to wear, since he had worn no. 11 during his Penn State days.
Simms’ family was not on board with that choice from the former player, though. Accordingly, no. 51 was what Carter landed on, even though it may not have been his first choice to don with New York. Regardless, now we will see what Carter wears next.
Maybe – this will be the one he prefers for the rest of his playing career with the Giants. Only time will tell.
