NFL insider names Commanders as top team to watch for All-Pro WR hitting the NFL free agency market
The Commanders are linked to landing a future Hall-of-Fame player in free agency next week, who would be an instant weapon for QB Jayden Daniels
The Washington Commanders are ready to make a splash this offseason with the NFL free agency period just days away.
The legal tamper window opens on Monday, March 9th, and teams are allowed to work on deals with pending free agents. General manager Adam Peters has to be aggressive, and they have more than enough salary cap space to do so.
One NFL insider says to keep an eye on high-profile WR Mike Evans as a real option for the Commanders when free agency begins.
The Commanders are named team to watch for All-Pro WR Mike Evans in free agency
Peters said the team wants to get younger and faster, and they absolutely need to, but they obviously won’t make only younger additions this offseason. Evans is hitting the market this offseason, and the Commanders were named a team to watch according to CBS NFL insider Jonathan Jones.
Evans will be turning 33 next season, which goes against getting younger, but there aren’t many options out there in free agency, and no players are a guarantee. The Commanders need to exhaust all options, which include signing Evans as a weapon for QB Jayden Daniels.
Jones reports that Evans will probably look for a two-year deal worth $25 million per year, but sources say he’s realistically going to get around $20 million per year, which is well in the Commanders’ price range.
Should the Commanders target WR Mike Evans in free agency?
Evans probably only has a year or two left in his career, but he’s looking to end his career with another 1,000-yard season. He ended his streak of 11-straight 1,000 yard season after an injury-riddled 2025 season, but the Commanders could look to get a lot of production from Evans if he stays healthy.
He had a hamstring injury, then broke his collarbone when he returned, and only played in 357 snaps last year. Evans will still have plenty of teams targeting him this offseason, but he will be picky about his options. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler says that Evans wants to go to a team with a QB he believes in, and he wants plenty of touches, and he’d get both in Washington.
The Commanders have a clear need at WR with Terry McLaurin possibly playing in his last season in Washington, and Deebo Samuel is a free agent with an expensive market. Evans is 6-5, 235 pounds, and would give Daniels a big, easy target to rely on early and often. This wouldn’t stop the Commanders from drafting a young WR in the NFL Draft, but they need to surround Daniels with as much talent as possible.
