Commanders may have tipped their hand on first free agency move they’ll make after confusing roster decision
The Commanders have a lot of work to do in free agency, but they may already know the first player they want after a surprise release.
The NFL free agency period is just days away, and reported deals will start to trickle in on Monday, March 9th, when the legal tampering window opens, although they won’t be official just yet.
The Washington Commanders are expected to be aggressive and active, but also only target players they’re high on, and not overpay and be reckless. General manager Adam Peters has already been aggressive by making surprising roster moves, including releasing starting center Tyler Biadasz.
Releasing Biadsz was an unexpected move that tells me the Commanders have a clear target in mind, and I believe their first free agency signing will be a new starting center.
Commanders could likely land their new starting center to kick off free agency
Releasing Biadasz came as a surprise since the Commanders only saved $2.85 million in savings for 2026, and took on a dead cap hit of $8.1 million, so this had nothing to do with money.
Peters only makes that move if he believes they can seriously upgrade the position this offseason, and I’m sure they already have a target or two in mind. Now, the Commanders have to get the position right and show that it was the right move to make this offseason. Don’t be surprised if the Commanders’ first move is a top center who wants to play with QB Jayden Daniels, and they have a strong market to target in free agency.
Top centers I believe the Commanders will look to sign
Baltimore Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum is expected to reset the market and earn a lucrative contract in free agency, so I highly doubt the Commanders are willing to overpay in a bidding war for him. My prediction is that Washington takes a swing at the next best center option, Connor McGovern.
McGovern said that he hasn’t even had contact with Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane, and he’s very likely playing on a new team next season. He’s just turning 28 years old, and would be a long-term solution at the position, and the next-best option after Linderbaum.
The Commanders could also check in on Elgton Jenkins if he’s released by the Green Bay Packers, which is expected to happen soon. Lloyd Cushenberry III was also released by the Tennessee Titans after an injury-riddled season, but he’s a younger high-ceiling player who could be an option to compete with Nick Allegretti at a lower price.
