Former Super Bowl champion retires, providing Los Angeles Rams with more ammunition to rebuild secondary
Darious Williams called it a career on Saturday, and it opens the door for the Rams to reform their cornerback room.
On Saturday, Los Angeles Rams cornerback Darious Williams announced his retirement. Williams carved out a tremendous career as a former undrafted free agent, playing eight seasons in the league. Williams was a key cog in the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI win, and has been a dependable option for Los Angeles throughout his career.
Per the Rams, Williams had the second-most pass breakups in the NFL (58) from 2020 to 2025. He was also second in passes defended (73) and seventh in completions against as the primary defender (189). His retirement opens another spot in the secondary that the Rams will have to fill.
Darious Williams retirement opens door for Rams’ rebuild
With Williams’ retirement, the Rams now have both space and further incentive to completely retool the cornerback room. They have just three cornerbacks under contract for next season in the recently-acquired Trent McDuffie, Emmanuel Forbes, and Josh Wallace. That’s plenty of snaps up for grabs and plenty of spaces to upgrade at.
Additionally, Williams’ retirement opens up plenty of cap space. The Rams will save $7.5M in cap room this year. He was slated to have an $8.66M cap hit for the 2026 season, one of the larger hits on the books for the Rams at this point, but will save the team $7.5 million in cap space with this retirement.
According to Over The Cap, the Rams entered the day with $27.46 million in cap room. Adding the Williams’ retirement to that gives them just about $34.96 million in cap room, plenty of wiggle room before free agency. However, that OTC does not have Kam Curl or Tyler Higbee’s extension factored in yet. I suspect the Rams will make a few moves to open up their cap space this offseason as they pursue an “all-in” season.
