Notre Dame football has been recruiting the running back position as well as any program in college football in recent years. Deland McCullough did a tremendous job as a recruiter and developer, and now Ja’Juan Seider has picked up where he left off. The 2026 recruiting class duo of Javian Osborne and Jonaz Walton was a great haul, and now Seider has a chance to continue that great trend in the 2027 class.

Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish made an extremely interesting offer this week to 2027 Frisco (Texas) High School athlete Brennen Lacey. At first glance, this appeared to be a bit of a puzzling offer. The more research you do, however, it becomes increasingly more and more intriguing, especially with so many teams seeing Lacey at different positions.

When it comes to versatility, you won’t find many more intriguing 2027 recruits than Lacey. While some view him as a wide receiver on the college level, Notre Dame extended him the offer as a running back. This is a unique athlete who unquestionably has some intriguing playmaking upside. This could end up being a massive riser in the 2027 class when all is said and done.

From a recruiting perspective, the party is just getting started for Lacey. There is no telling just how high he will rise when he finally does get a recruiting ranking. Perhaps Notre Dame ends up making a strong push for him, but for now, this is just a really intriguing player who brings a ton of upside to the table as an athlete.

Brennen Lacey’s recruiting background

Lacey brings one of the more bizarre recruiting profiles to the table that you will see in the 2027 class. The Texas native hasn’t yet been ranked by any of the major recruiting platforms, although it feels like that will change at some point. Despite no rankings to his name, Lacey has seen his offer list begin to populate this offseason. His offer list includes the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Western Kentucky, and North Texas.

As a junior at Frisco High School in 2025, Lacey put together some impressive moments. In nine games, Lacey rushed for 537 yards and eight touchdowns on just 59 carries, an average of 9.1 yards per carry. The 6-0, 185-pound athlete also managed to haul in ten receptions for 160 yards and two more scores, while also making an impact as a kick returner. This is an extremely interesting athlete to monitor.
