Michigan defensive run game coordinator and linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary talks to Maize Team players during the second half of the spring game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 20, 2024.

Notre Dame football currently holds a 2027 linebacker commitment from Florida star Amarri Irvin. With a brand new linebackers coach in Brian Jean-Mary coming to South Bend this offseason, the Fighting Irish provided him with a solid baseline. Now he has the chance to showcase the recruiting impact that he can have.

As of today, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are viewed as a top team for elite 2027 Tampa Bay (Fla.) Jesuit linebacker Kaden Henderson, but a bit further back on the list. Things did move in a positive direction for Notre Dame with Henderson, with them being named to his top five schools. They were joined by Ohio State, Alabama, Texas A&M, and Miami.

Henderson has been a player that Notre Dame has been high on for some time now. Even after changing over to Jean-Mary, that fact has remained the same. While the Irish are viewed as a bit of a wildcard for the talented defender, I have learned not to count out Freeman and Co. on the recruiting trail in recent years. They will need to have a strong couple of months to get this deal done in the end.

Henderson’s recruiting background

Henderson is considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms currently. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Henderson is rated as a five-star, the No. 24 overall player, the No. 1 linebacker, and the No. 3 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class right now. He has been one of the biggest risers in the class over the last several months.

While his recruiting rankings are elite, Henderson’s offer list might be even better. With over 40 offers already, Henderson is not without a long list of impressive options. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Ohio State, Alabama, Oregon, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, USC, Clemson, Miami, Auburn, Florida State, Missouri, South Carolina, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, West Virginia, SMU, Wisconsin, Pitt, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, Baylor, UNC, Syracuse, UCF, Duke, and Kansas, among others.

Despite missing some time as a junior, Henderson was able to make his impact known on the Jesuit defense. In 10 games, the 6-2, 215-pound defender managed to collect 49 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and nine sacks. Henderson added another 20 quarterback hurries, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and a blocked punt.
