The Lions add another offensive lineman to the mix, but he’s not coming to Detroit for what you think

The Lions fill an important spot on the offensive line, but not the big spot you’re thinking of

The Detroit Lions are not done on the offensive line just yet. After getting things set up with their new starting center, Cade Mays, on Monday, the Lions are looking to add to their tackle depth by adding former Dolphins and Bears tackle Larry Borom.

Where the Lions can put Borom in 2026

You shouldn’t view Borom as the Lions’ next starting left tackle. That is not going to be the guess for Detroit. While Borom did start in Miami and was a spot starter in Chicago, he is very likely to be the Lions’ new swing tackle in Detroit.

This is the role that Dan Skipper has played for the Lions for the last few years. The idea is that he comes in on jumbo packages or when the Lions want to max protect. He can also be an eligible tight end and maybe go out for a pass here and there. That’s a maybe and not a for sure that’s happening.

Borom is a strong pass blocker, and that fits what the Lions need at the spot. He’ll likely be utilized more in that realm than in the run game, where he has struggled.

Our Miami Dolphins beat writer, Kyle Crabbs, had this to say about Borom when we asked about him:

“Borom arrived in Miami with a battered reputation after playing in some non-functional offenses and blocking for quarterbacks who loved to hold on to the football for extended time. In Miami, things became much more predictable for Borom in pass protection. He was reliable. Hit his marks. Anchored well enough. I don’t see him as a plus starter but as a utility offensive lineman who could absolutely hold his own with extended playing time. I think Borom has a great deal of value on that front.”

That echoes what we were saying about the move. More than anything, he gives the Lions stronger depth than what they had with Skipper in his final year and what they have with Giovanni Manu, whose status is beginning to feel more up in the air with every passing day.

The Lions are likely not done on the offensive line this offseason. They still need to find their starting left tackle or their starting right tackle if the rumors that Penei Sewell is moving to the left side come true. They’ll likely find him in the draft.
