Notre Dame football predicted to land one of the best defensive backs in the 2027 recruiting class over other elite options
Notre Dame football appears to be in prime position to land an elite 2027 defender.
Notre Dame football has made it a habit of recruiting and developing some outstanding defensive backs over the last several years. Mike Mickens managed to create one of the elite secondaries in all of college football, and now it is up to Aaron Henry to continue that impressive trend.
Even before Henry was hired as the new secondary coach this offseason, head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish valued 2027 La Verne (Calif.) Damien safety Gavin Williams in a big way. That push has continued under Henry, and it has allowed Notre Dame to trend in a very positive direction. That includes earning a spring visit to South Bend scheduled for March 28. Williams will also be making trips to see Washington (March 7), USC (March 13), Texas A&M (April 2), Michigan (April 9), Miami (April 18), and UCLA (April 25).
This recruitment is far from over, but confidence on the Notre Dame side continues to trend upward. So much so that Mike Singer from Rivals logged an expert prediction for Williams to land with the Fighting Irish. It would be a huge commitment if Freeman and Co. were able to pull it off.
The California native is one of the more dynamic defensive backs in the entire 2027 recruiting class. His combination of range and ball skills is extremely impressive. You could make a strong argument that there isn’t a higher upside cover man in the country, or at least that Williams is near the top of that list.
Gavin Williams recruiting background
Williams is considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Williams currently ranks as the No. 151 overall player, the No. 13 safety, and the No. 12 player from the state of California for the 2027 recruiting class. On their own individual ranking has him rated highest right now, sitting as the No. 86 overall player in the country.
The offer list for Williams also matches his high rankings. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, Michigan, Oregon, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, USC, Florida State, Auburn, Miami, Missouri, Utah, Nebraska, Washington, SMU, Kentucky, BYU, Arkansas, Arizona State, Arizona, Michigan State, UCLA, UNC, Syracuse, Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, Maryland, West Virginia, and Cal, among others.
As a junior in 2025, Williams put together a tremendous season for Damien. In ten games, the 6-1, 180-pound defensive back managed to collect 63 total tackles, two interceptions, and eight pass breakups. Williams also had five tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and a blocked kick.
To demonstrate the athleticism that Williams possesses, he was also a notable performer on the offensive side of the football. Williams made 23 receptions for 401 yards and four touchdowns, an average of 17.4 yards per reception.
