A Sean Payton quote is going viral that explains the Denver Broncos’ slow approach to free agency
The Denver Broncos haven’t made a big splash in free agency so far this week.
The Denver Broncos are catching some heat from fans for their slow start to free agency.
Denver didn’t aggressively pursue a couple of players — such as running backs Kenneth Walker III or Travis Etienne — that many believed would be top free agent targets for the Broncos.
Instead, the Broncos have operated quietly and disciplined, refusing to overpay for a free agent just for the sake of making a splash.
There’s an old Sean Payton quote going viral this week that helps explains Denver’s approach.
Sean Payton isn’t making moves just to make moves
The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider pointed out this week some comments that Payton made in 2024 before the NFL trade deadline.
Payton mentioned that his brother is the worst at free agency and the trade deadline because he just wants action.
“My brother’s the worst at this,” said Payton. “He’s the worst at free agency, and he’s the worst at the trade deadline. He just wants to see action. Then right after the action takes place, he never goes back and reflects and says, ‘Well that was a bad signing,’ or, ‘That was a bad trade.’ I say that — I kid him — but I think that there’s so much more that goes into it relative to whether you’re trading a player [or] acquiring a player.
“Contracts go into it, vision goes into it and locker room goes into it. There are a lot of details that go into that. To answer your question fairly, I’m sitting here with the numbers right now with Kansas City, the depth chart, injury report and scouting report. [I] kind of finished up on Baltimore. Our players are in meetings on Baltimore. That’s where we’re at.”
If there was a player that Denver believed would make them a significantly better team, the Broncos probably would’ve been more aggressive on the first two days of free agency. But there just wasn’t any way the Broncos were going to sign a player like wide receiver Romeo Doubs for $17 million a year when they’re paying Troy Franklin $1.3 million a year for similar production.
Sometimes the best moves are the moves you don’t make.
