Top remaining free agents Commanders can still sign during second wave of NFL free agency period
The Commanders still have plenty of free agents on the market they can sign to address their remaining needs before the NFL Draft.
The Washington Commanders were one of the most active teams in free agency, and the roster looks much improved because of it.
A lot of the attention is turning to the 2026 NFL Draft, but there are still plenty of notable free agents the Commanders can sign before then to fill their remaining roster needs. Don’t sleep on these four free agents who could be a quality late addition.
Stefon Diggs, WR
Stefon Diggs isn’t still on the market because of a lack of talent, but because of his off-the-field concerns and a potential suspension looming. He may not be signed until all of that is cleared up, but Diggs on a one-year deal would make sense if the Commanders can’t land the WR they want in the NFL Draft.
Diggs had a massive season on the road to the Super Bowl with the New England Patriots, with over 1,000 yards. He was also very reliable with just two drops on 100 targets as Drake Maye’s WR1. Signing the 32-year-old WR would be a last resort, but an insurance plan if their draft plans don’t work out.
Martin Emerson, CB
The Commanders need to keep adding to their CB room, and Martin Emerson is who I’d take a swing on. Emerson is just 25 years old, and he was a lockdown corner in 2022 and 2023 before tearing his Achilles in 2024. He missed the entire 2025 season, but he’s currently working out and looks ready to go.
Emerson could potentially take over as a starting outside corner, or at least push Mike Sainristil, who has struggled recently. He’s likely to receive a one-year prove-it deal to see how he looks after his injury, but he was playing as a Pro Bowl CB before he was hurt. Emerson could be a cheap fix to invest in, let him heal, and see what he could be.
Ashtyn Davis, Safety
The Commanders added Nick Cross in free agency, but they still lack quality depth. Cross might be the only safety worth starting on the roster, and Ashtyn Davis was a key starter on the New York Jets before he struggled in his lone season with the Miami Dolphins. The Commanders still need a free safety in the secondary, and Davis could be a viable option.
He’s also versatile enough to play in the box when needed at 6-1, 202 pounds. Daronte Jones loves versatility, and he needs better safety play than what the Commanders currently have. He’s projected to sign a one-year $2 million contract in free agency, and he’s better than what they currently have.
Jauan Jennings, WR
Jauan Jennings is the top free agent available on the market, and I’m actually surprised he hasn’t signed with a team. I believe the Commanders are high on his list, and he could land in Washington if he lowers his price. He’s projected to receive a three-year, $50 million deal, which is likely too high for the Commanders at this point.
Landing the 6-3, 212-pound WR at the right price would make this a perfect free agency period for Adam Peters. The WR room is still a major concern after missing on Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs, and adding Jennings would open the door to all options with the No. 7 overall pick. They could still draft a top WR for the future and let Terry McLaurin, Jennings, and the rookie become a strong WR room in 2026.
