Chargers bring back key veteran even after his recent comments that threw shade at the team

The Bolts were smart to overlook that and get him back in the fold.

The Los Angeles Chargers are making a reunion happen for their defense. It’s one that fans clamored for since the team’s season ended in a playoff loss.

Chargers sign safety Tony Jefferson

According to Jordan Schultz, the Bolts are bringing back safety Tony Jefferson on a one-year deal worth $2 million. Jefferson had one of the best years of his career last season and posted career highs in both interceptions and passes defensed.

This was a smart move, as the Chargers don’t have much proven safety depth on the roster currently. Jefferson clearly fit what they were trying to do a season ago, and even without Jesse Minter calling the unit anymore, they see him as a fit.

The deal comes after Jefferson seemingly threw shade at prior offers from LA recently on social media, though. A reunion didn’t seem likely, but it happened anyway.

Jefferson’s recent social media comment made this seem unlikely

When asked on Twitter/X about the Chargers offering him a new contract or not, Jefferson made it clear that he wasn’t signing a deal that didn’t prove his value.

“Brother I’m not signing nothing that doesnt have guaranteed money in it. Thats a fact , im done with the he has no value approach I clearly proved that’s not true” — Jefferson via X/Twitter

Before this comment on a rocky negotiation, Jefferson did make sure to show major love for the Bolts fan base before free agency began last week. He valued his opportunity to play in front of the fan base and felt the love.

Clearly, the two sides came together and understood how his leadership and presence in the secondary can help the Chargers achieve their goals next season. Jefferson played good football last year in his return to the team and became a defensive fan favorite due to his knack for making a clutch play.
