After spending the first two seasons of his college career with the Tennessee Vols, defensive back Boo Carter joined the Colorado Buffaloes earlier this year via the NCAA transfer portal.

Carter, a former four-star recruit, was dismissed from Tennessee’s football team in November after he failed to show up for the Vols’ homecoming game against New Mexico State.

The Chattanooga native was already on thin ice at Tennessee after he missed several team activities last summer.

While Carter’s time at Tennessee ended on a sour note, there’s no doubt that he’s a dynamic athlete with NFL potential.

A fresh start at Colorado could help Carter put the off-the-field issues that plagued him at Tennessee in the rearview.

Why Boo Carter was singled out at a recent Colorado practice

Carter was singled out in front of the Colorado football team last week at practice, but it wasn’t because of something negative.

A clip that went semi-viral on social media showed a couple of Colorado coaches singling Carter out in front of the team for the way he bounced back after a tough start to practice.

Carter was praised by two Colorado coaches, with the second coach, former Ohio State safety Vonn Bell, insisting that Carter stand up in front of the team after praising the former Vol’s character.

“That’s what wins championships,” said Bell while recognizing Carter.

Bell said last week after a practice that Carter got off to a rocky start at Colorado before showing off his elite talent.

“It’s been good,” Bell said of Carter’s spring so far. “It started a little rocky, but he’s embracing those challenges. He’s been in the office every day, pressing forward every day, striving every day to be the best version of himself. And it’s showing on the field.

“He had a great day today. Made a play on the ball today. I wanted him to get an interception, but you know, my goal is always high. It’s a high standard for him — because he’s so talented. The sky’s the limit for him. He’s got to keep on building those bricks every day, day by day — mentality and the process. And like I said, he’s one of the most talented guys I’ve seen in a long time.”

If Carter can be consistent, he can easily be one of the top safeties in college football.
