One NFL Draft prospect is a perfect fit for the Minnesota Vikings offense and nobody is talking about it
It’s clear that he would fit Kevin O’Connell’s offense perfectly.
Taking a look at the Minnesota Vikings roster ahead of the NFL Draft, there are numerous positions that they need to add ahead of the start of the 2026 season.
- Defensive tackle
- Cornerback
- Inside linebacker
- Safety
- Edge rusher
- Wide receiver
- Center
- Tight end
Free agency is going help the Vikings add some depth across the board, but it’s the NFL Draft that will bring the Vikings talented players. The focus for many will end up being 18th overall, but it’s the second round that has a player taylor made for head coach Kevin O’Connell’s offense, and he’s gotten little to no buzz.
Germie Bernard is a perfect fit for Kevin O’Connell’s offense
Wide receiver is a sneaky need for the Vikings. We know that they are currently planning to extend Jordan Addison, but there is no guarantee they get it done. Even if they choose to keep Addison, they need to improvedat WR3. Tai Felton is a talented player, but he gave us little to no confidence that he’s the guy moving forward.
The first round isn’t a likely spot for a wide receiver, but it could have the best available player on the board. Day two is a much more likely spot for that position, and 49th overall has the perfect player for O’Connell’s offense: Alabama WR Germie Bernard
When you look at what wide receivers are available in the NFL Draft, there are a lot of different ways you can go. The Vikings have prioritized a certain type of wide receiver during O’Connell’s tenure: someone they beleive can be a well-rounded weapon who has plus athleticism. Felton and Jalen Nailor were more of the explosive variety with higher-end speed, while Addison profiles just like Justin Jefferson as a route running savant.
Bernard fits the Jefferson and Addison mold to a T, and his athletic profile is that of a plus route runner.
From a size perspective, Bernard is a very similar build to Jefferson, and while his game nor projection is anywhere near that of the best wide receiver in the game, he’s a well-rounded prospect in the same way. Overall, my scouting report on Bernard is that of a balanced player.
Strengths
- Bernard as a plus football IQ. Understands how the defense is playing him and attacks accordingly.
- With the ball in the air, Bernard does a great job tracking it in the air. He doesn’t wait for the ball to come to him, choosing to attack it instead.
- Is a very smooth, technical route runner. Makes cuts without losing momentum, making in and out-breaking routes look effortless.
- Bernard has excellent hands. On 232 targets, Bernard has just four charted drops in his career.
Weaknesses
- Bernard is not an overly twitchy athlete. Doesn’t possess a lot of snap in his movements, making his route running less explosive. It also hinders him after the catch, as he struggles to evade defenders in open space.
- Top-end speed isn’t there with Bernard. He’s likely going to run in the 4.5s and won’t breakaway from defenders.
The film showcases a Kevin O’Connell type wide receiver
When you turn on the tape, it’s evident immediately how Bernard would fit seemlessly into O’Connell’s offense. The first thing that stands out is his ability to thrive on breaking routes. This past year, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb called a lot of in-breaking routes, something O’Connell loves to do. He doesn’t lose any momentum when turning, which is important.
Bernard is a smooth savant with route running prowess that O’Connell will know how to maximize. His movement skills start with his feet, and he can create separation quickly. While he isn’t overly twitchy, Bernard has a level of quickness and smooth footwork to create space against any kind of coverage.
The last element is something that O’Connell would love to have more of, as both Jefferson and Addison can get yards after the catch, but it isn’t their forte. Bernard was used in multiple ways, including on the ground. In his career, Bernard has 33 rushes for 184 yards and five touchdowns. He also has a yards after catch percentage of 44.85% in his career.
While Bernard isn’t the most twitchy or explosive from the perspective of long speed, but he’s plenty athletic enough and crafty with how he moves in space. All of those elements will help maximize the Vikings’ offense, and give O’Connell another player in the same mold of Jefferson and Addison.
It won’t be the most exciting selection, but he would thrive in Minnesota.
