NFL insider’s new update on Myles Garrett trade speculation gives most Cleveland Browns fans what they want to hear
Myles Garrett trade rumors have swirled since his contract was modified, and there’s a new update on where things stand.
News broke around the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday due to one move they made with Myles Garrett’s contract which led people to believe he could soon be traded.
Cleveland and Garrett agreed to redo the park of his contract where an option bonus triggers on March 26 in each year of the deal for north of $29 million. The Browns moved the date to seven days before the league year in a move stated by multiple cap experts that would give them no real cap benefit.
It only took one day for the Browns to respond.
Browns have a clear stance on Myles Garrett’s future
“I got a call on Tuesday night,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday. “A team called me, they’re like, “Hey, hey, hey, all right, do you see this Myles Garrett thing?” I’m like, “No.” What they said [was] his option bonuses were shifting around. I’m like, “Yeah.” And they’re like, “Well, if you’re shifting option bonuses around, usually there is like some trade smoke.”
Now let me say this right away: I called the Browns. I’m like, “What’s going on here?” And they’re like, “We are 100% definitely not trading him.” Now I will say this, they were adamant about it. They were like, “Don’t even bring up and dignify the fact that we’re not trading him. Shut it down.”
Whether or not the Browns are going to trade Garrett, we just don’t know right now. We do know the move they made with the option bonus keeps the window open to trading him all the way up to seven days for the season starts. If the option had triggered this month, the possibility of Garrett being traded would have gone out the window. Cleveland wouldn’t pay Garrett the $29 million to pay for another team in 26, just how it works.
Garrett is coming off a 23-sack season where the Browns still finished with a 5-12 record to show for it. The All-Pro pass rusher requested a trade a year ago due to wanting to play for a competitor, and he could still feel the same way.
Just remember, it was reported the Cowboys would trade Micah Parsons at one time. Leverage and smoke screws matter in the NFL. Take everything with a grain of salt and let it play out with this one.
