Bears quarterback provides more insight on what Chicago should expect from Press Taylor after his promotion to offensive coordinator
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson will have a new right-hand man during the 2026 season.
One of the more underrated losses of the Chicago Bears offseason was losing offensive coordinator Declan Doyle after one season with Doyle taking a lateral position with the Baltimore Ravens under new head coach Jesse Minter.
Considering the Bears have a offensive-minded head coach that calls plays in Ben Johnson, Doyle’s impact during the 2025 season was largely overlooked in the grand scheme of things, but it shouldn’t be. Doyle is now onto bigger and better things to advance his career and in his place, the Bears promoted from within naming former passing game coordinator Press Taylor as the new OC.
Taylor has experience in the role after spending three seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars under then head coach Doug Pederson. It wasn’t the best stint and the decision to promote Taylor raised some eyebrows initially.
Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent was asked earlier in the week about what he saw from Taylor while he was on the staff in 2025 and Bagent’s response should quell some concerns from the fanbase.
Tyson Bagent has a lot of respect for new Bears offensive coordinator Press Taylor
“He is an extreme student of the game and is one of the smoothest dudes walking around the building every day,” Bagent said of Taylor, via CHGO Bears. “The definition of cool, calm, and collected because he’s been through it. He was a coordinator and he got fired, but I’m telling you man, guy’s like Press Taylor don’t come around every day.
“This dude loves the game, this dude’s got a freaking nerd database with a million different plays versus a million different defenses, he is hilarious, and he’s a really good dude and he works really hard. I knew that that was going to happen, I was just curious to see how long it was going to take to promote my guy.”
Taylor is truly football junkie and is a robot when it comes to watching film and finding holes in the defense. This is the same guy credited with creating the “Philly Special” and the one who designed the flea-flicker touchdown that went to Luther Burden III last season against the Dallas Cowboys.
During the interview process for the OC job, Johnson brought in some young faces that would be hungry and eager to do the grunt work the position demands, similar to Doyle. Clearly, Taylor showed those same traits while having previous experience as an OC to reflect on under his belt.
“Outstanding dude, outstanding coach, nobody else better for the job,” Bagent added. “Especially him and Ben have a little bit of history and obviously worked pretty well together last year.”
Promoting Press Taylor keeps necessary continuity for the Bears offense
It’s going to be a smooth transition for the entire offensive staff as opposed to bringing a new face into the building. Taylor’s experience in 2025 as the passing game coordinator can also help focus more on the passing side of the offense and getting quarterback Caleb Williams to take that next step going into Year 2 under this scheme.
“I think that’s a big part of it,” Taylor told Jeff Joniak on the Bears, etc. Podcast. “Him just knowing, for him, what Year 3 looks like because of Year 2 looking a certain way. He knows the expectation, he knows the people around him, he knows what he needs to do to get better. . . Now we’re going to get a chance to, the day they get here, be progressing in our football knowledge and the knowledge of our system and the way we do things.”
Taylor reiterated the same thing Johnson said during the end of season press conference that even though the continuity is there, it’s still back to square one when the players get back in the building and start with the fundamentals again. However, having the continuity can help speed up that process this time around and help unlock more out of Williams and the passing game in 2026.
