The Washington Commanders have had an active offseason with a load of new changes to the coaching staff and the roster.

General manager Adam Peters added a lot of new talent in free agency, but they also retained some of their own, like LG Chris Paul. There’s still a handful of free agents for the Commanders that have yet to find a new home, including a future Hall of Famer. The latest report says the Commanders are open to bringing him back, but he might not have a spot anymore.

Commanders are open to bringing back LB Bobby Wagner, but they like their younger players

Bobby Wagner is headed to the Hall of Fame when he decides to hang it up, but he said that he’s looking to continue playing in the NFL, but he hasn’t found a home yet. Wagner was a key leader on defense for the Commanders, but his flaws in coverage were a liability that needed to be addressed.

ESPN’s John Keim reports that the Commanders are open to bringing Wagner back, but they like what they have right now. Head coach Dan Quinn said that he would never close the door on Wagner, but they’re expecting younger players to take off.

The Commanders’ LB room has filled out nicely this offseason, and they do have a lot of youth that could develop in different areas. Should they consider bringing Wagner back and potentially wasting a year for those younger players getting more in-game reps?

The Commanders should lean on their youth at LB

It’s hard to say no to a player like Wagner, but the Commanders just signed LB Leo Chenal in free agency, who is just 25 years old. They’re also expecting a bounce-back season for Frankie Luvu, who struggled last season.

The Commanders have also drafted a lot of young talent at the position who can also take a major step forward in their development under defensive coordinator Daronte Jones. Jordan Magee was a fifth-round pick who showed a lot of flashes in his athleticism last season, and can be poised for a breakout season.

Kain Medrano was a fifth-round pick last year, and maybe he can actually see the field on defense next season. Undrafted free agent Al Kaho also made the team after impressing in preseason, so the Commanders have plenty of bodies in the LB room, but they need to develop. Wagner is a great leader and mentor, but it’s time to let the young players take over moving forward.
