College football analyst just proved why Alabama fans should be confident regardless of who wins the quarterback competition
No matter who wins the competition, Alabama fans have reason to be excited.
The Alabama Crimson Tide has reached the midpoint in its spring season. 7 practices in, and the first scrimmage down, there have been some notable revelations through camp. It all starts and ends with what happens at the quarterback position, however.
Over the weekend, a video of Alabama’s scrimmage was leaked, and while Ryan Williams was the main character, both Austin Mack and Keelon Russell were seen tossing him dimes. And while everyone wants to know who will be “the guy,” Josh Pate says Alabama fans should be confident regardless.
Josh Pate feels good about Alabama’s QB room
“Alabama doesn’t even have a starter name yet, so this is kind of abnormal, but Keelon Russell and Austin Mack, whoever wins that job, obviously will have beaten the other, which means they were good enough to take the job,” said Pate on Josh Pate’s College Football Show on YouTube. “No matter who it is, I’ve got medium to high confidence on Alabama’s quarterback situation, regardless of who ends up starting.”
“They have totally overhauled their offensive line there. They have hired a new offensive line coach there. They have tried to overhaul their running game. It’s spring. It’s halfway through spring practice, or maybe even less than so we don’t really know. I haven’t even been down there. I haven’t seen the practice. I don’t know what it’s looked like. I know it pretty literally can’t look worse than it did last year,” Pate added about the offensive line.
Why Josh Pate is right about Alabama’s QB position
Say what you want about coach DeBoer as it pertains to what Alabama is as a football program post-Nick Saban, but what is undeniable is his track record with quarterbacks. Just look at his last three starters: Michael Penix went in the first round, Jalen Milroe went from his own coach saying he should switch positions, to being drafted in the third round, and Ty Simpson will likely be gone come night one in April.
So whoever wins the starting job, will have shown enough for DeBoer to be confident in his decision. And if DeBoer is confident in his quarterback, especially when he handpicked the two competing for the starting job, then the confidence of Alabama fans should follow.
