Former Tennessee Vols WR Jauan Jennings gets a big update about his future in the NFL
Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings is still looking for a new home in the NFL.
Former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings is still looking for a new home in the NFL.
Jennings is a free agent this offseason after spending the first six seasons of his pro career with the San Francisco 49ers.
The 49ers and Jennings held mutual interest in a long-term extension a year ago, but the two sides could never agree on the numbers.
Jauan Jennings won’t be returning to the 49ers
The feeling has been that as long as Jennings is a free agent, San Francisco could still bring the former Vol back — especially since his market hasn’t developed the way he thought it would.
But it sounds like that’s not in the cards for the 49ers.
San Francisco general manager John Lynch recently spoke to NBC Sports about the team’s offseason so far, and he basically said goodbye to Jennings.
“Jauan’s one of my favorite players,” said Lynch. “He’s one of Kyle’s favorite players (49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan). He’ll find a good home, and Jauan will go play great football for someone. I can’t say enough for what that guy did (for the 49ers). When that guy stepped between the lines, man, he was a presence, and they had to deal with him. And he won us a lot of football games.”
The 49ers essentially chose Mike Evans over Jennings this offseason.
Evans, who spent the first 12 seasons of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is a future Hall of Famer who has a Super Bowl win on his resumé. The 49ers are hoping he can help take the team’s offense to the next level.
Jennings, though, provided an important edge for the 49ers. That’s something that won’t be easy to replace, but San Francisco apparently feels like they can reach their goals without Jennings.
We’ll see if that was the right move.
