The Lions are not going to participate in something they’ve always participated in

This one might not seem like a big deal, but it’s a pretty big deal. The Detroit Lions are making a big change to their training camp process in 2026.

For the first time since 2021, the Lions will not have any joint practices this summer

Joint practices have been a major part of what the Lions do at training camp, and it really has a lot to do with how Detroit preps its starters for the season.

“Another reason we do these (joint practices) is that I feel like you’ve got two great days of work, banked a lot of reps, and so I don’t see us playing these starters this week. I don’t see it,” Campbell told Stoney and Jansen on 97.1 The Ticket in 2023. “We’re going to sit that core group again, and let some of these young guys go. There may be a few select rookies we don’t play. We’ll see where we’re at there as well. But I think that’s the benefit of having this (joint practice session). We had over 40 reps yesterday.”

The Lions have given a lot of credit to the teams that they’ve faced in those joint practices for getting them ready for the season, not just a physical way, but a mental way as well. It’s given the Lions an understanding of how competitive teams are going to be with them during the season.

Now the question goes to the preseason. Since the joint practices have always been something for the starters and the young guys get the preseason games, are the Lions going to start putting starters in these games? Or will they continue to sit them to make sure they can have a little extra health going into the season? We’ll find out more about this in July.
