Notre Dame football is positioning itself to get the better of a hated rival for a fast-rising recruiting target
Notre Dame has the chance to pull the rug out from under a hated rival with a recruit from their own backyard.
Notre Dame football recruiting is on quite the heater recently in the 2027 class. After head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish staff put together an elite group in 2026, there is optimism that they can do the same this cycle. They are certainly on quite the roll after earning commitments from Lathan Whisenton and Isaiah Rogers.
There was an underrated visitor during the most recent recruiting weekend for the Irish. 2027 Saline (Mich.) High School offensive lineman Louis Esposito made the trip to South Bend, a fast rising recruit in this class. It is especially interesting considering that Esposito is currently committed to the Michigan Wolverines, a hated rival of the Notre Dame program.
Even though Esposito has been committed to the Wolverines since July of last year, he has been keeping his eyes open to other possibilities. Offensive line coach Joe Rudolph and Freeman threw their hats in the ring for the talented recruit. A few days after making that visit to Notre Dame, things are developing quickly. Optimism is growing that the Irish can pull this flip off whenever a decision is made.
It would be a legitimate loss for Michigan, especially when you consider that his father, Lou Esposito, is on the Wolverine staff as the defensive line coach. Add in the fact that Notre Dame has a natural distaste for the Michigan program. Irish fans would love to pry him away for that fact alone.
There is also some familiarity with Esposito since he comes from the same high school as starting quarterback CJ Carr. If Notre Dame is able to make this flip happen, everyone is going to hope that Esposito becomes a fraction of the performer that Carr is.
Louis Esposito’s recruiting background
Esposito is considered to be a three-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Esposito currently ranks as the No. 966 overall player, the No. 63 interior offensive linemen, and the No. 19 player from the state of Michigan for the 2026 recruiting class. Judging by the offseason demand for Esposito, those rankings should trend upward going into his senior season.
The 6-5, 285-pound offensive lineman has been a 2027 recruit who has demanded the attention of several prominent programs this offseason. Some of the top offers for the Michigan native include the Fighting Irish, the Wolverines, Penn State, USC, Louisville, Michigan State, Pitt, and Purdue, among many others.
