The San Francisco Giants certainly earned themselves some new Vol fans (likely not all, as some probably irked by the move) when they inked Tennessee fan favorite Tony Vitello as their new manager last year.
And now, the former Vols skipper will have one of his former players in his locker room for at least the short term.
The Giants announced on Thursday evening that they’re recalling pitcher Blade Tidwell from Triple-A Sacramento.
Giants recalled former Tennessee Vols pitcher Blade Tidwell from Triple-A
Tidwell has one start under his belt this year, going 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and one walk with no runs allowed. Last year, between Triple-A Syracuse and Sacramento, he went 6-4 with a 3.52 ERA in 17 starts and 97 innings pitched. He struck out 111, walking 37 and allowing a .218 batting average.
He came over with fellow former Vol Drew Gilbert in a trade from the New York Mets last season. The duo were traded together in a package for Giants reliever Tyler Rogers in a move shortly before the MLB trade deadline. Gilbert came up and got some work late in the season for the Giants. This will be Tidwell’s first time up for San Francisco.
Tidwell played for Vitello at Tennessee from 2021-22 and was a starter on the 2021 team that became the first to reach the College World Series since 2005. He finished his career in Knoxville with a 3.53 ERA in 137.2 innings pitched with a 13-5 record and 141 strikeouts.
