If the Miami Dolphins‘ early strategy at cornerback is any indication, it’d probably be safety to assume that the cornerback room is going to be a no-holds-barred battle royal.

Miami has a ton of names and faces in the cornerback room already — although none of the cornerbacks that the Dolphins currently boast on the roster have a lot of proven track record on their respective resumes. That isn’t necessarily the worst case scenario, but it does underscore the competition in the room. Based on the trends Miami has targeted at the position, there may be another worthwhile name on the market for the Dolphins to consider: former Cleveland Browns cornerback Martin Emerson.

Dolphins should explore signing cornerback Martin Emerson in free agency

Martin Emerson is a a former third-round draft choice by the Cleveland Browns in the 2022 NFL Draft. Emerson appeared to break out in 2023, posting four interceptions in his second NFL season and logging a grand total of 29 passes defensed across his first two years.

But Emerson’s ball production and play dipped in 2024 before a summer Achilles injury in 2025 ended his fourth season before it ever began. That’s the last of Emerson that the Browns saw — and he’s still on the market and waiting for a new team.

Emerson fits the profile of a new Dolphins cornerback. He’s tall (nearly 6-foot-2), long (33.5″ arms), aggressive, and physical. He’d mirror the strengths of names like JuJu Brents, Darrell Baker Jr., Jason Marshall Jr., Miles Battle, Alex Austin, and others.

Due to the Achilles injury, Emerson could (and should) be close to a minimum salary player on the open market. As a point of reference, former Dolphins cornerback Kader Kohou commanded just a $1.81M one-year deal to sign with the Chiefs this offseason. Even if Emerson commanded the same deal, Miami would have the cap space to accommodate him.

The sales pitch for the Dolphins is simple: if you want an opportunity to win playing time and prove you’re healthy as a physical press cornerback, Miami has the situation and the need. The current room has plenty of contenders — but a healthy Martin Emerson could be the most proven of the bunch. It takes two to tango and Emerson’s potentially still roped into rehabbing that Achilles injury. But when he’s ready to sign, Miami should be quick to dial.
