Ryan Day’s latest statement is more ammo toward Ohio State football finding a potential real diamond in the rough
Brock Boyd has been a name to know for Ohio State this spring as a freshman. Now, Ryan Day has something to say about the newcomer.
The Ohio State Buckeyes football team has 51 new players on its roster this year between a big transfer portal class and the 2026 recruiting class.
Chris Henry Jr. was Ohio State’s headline recruit as an incoming five-star wideout recruited by Brian Hartline. This spring it hasn’t been Henry generating the most buzz out of the freshmen, or even at the wide receiver position.
One of Ohio State’s lowest-rated signings from the 2026 class is creating the most buzz, and head coach Ryan Day’s latest comment is only going to stoke the fire.
Ryan Day makes a strong statement about one of Ohio State’s freshmen turning heads unexpectedly
It’s been former three-star recruit WR Brock Boyd standing out the most this spring for the Buckeyes. The 6-foot-1 wideout from Texas has left his mark this spring and it couldn’t be clearer.
“A very mature approach, he goes hard every play, he’s very smart in how he gets open, he’s a good route runner, he understands multiple positions, and just plays fast every play,” Day stated on Monday. “Just looks very confident in what he does, he’s a good example of people who prepare at a high level and can be fast because they’re anticipating opposed to reacting.”
Day went on to say Boyd is very competitive, has a great mindset, and that he’s fun to be around. The route running has jumped off the screen in any spring practice videos to surface. After a very productive high school career where he combined for just under 3,000 receiving yards at Southlake Carroll (TX) between his last two years of high school football alone.
Where does Brock Boyd fit into the mix?
Carnell Tate is out of the picture for Ohio State and off the NFL. Jeremiah Smith and Brandon Inniss return as the top two wideouts for the Buckeyes, and they went out and got Devin McCuinn and Kyle Parker from the transfer portal. Henry figures to be in the mix opposite of Henry with a mix of Inniss, Parker, and McCuinn seeing time in the slot.
Jerquaden Guilford is another talented freshman — De’Zie Jones, and Phillip Bell are second year pliers looking for roles. With the buzz created by Boyd this spring, he looks to be ahead of all three players.
Ohio State isn’t going to rush Boyd onto the field but if he belongs out there as a freshman he will be. One thing is for sure, Hartline left Ohio State in great shape at the position, and Boyd looks to be a huge part of it.
