There are a bevy of different NFL Draft strategies the Minnesota Vikings.

We looked into the idea of what it would look like with a first-round pick at wide receiver by selecting Texas A&M Aggies wide receiver KC Concepcion. It’s quite an interesting idea, as they only need a wide receiver three. Even so, last year’s third wide receiver, Jalen Nailor, played around 50% of the snaps, so it’s not a depth position for Minnesota.

They have multiple other needs, including linebacker, cornerback, and defensive tackle. Even so, the one need that people have focused on with the NFL Draft is safety, and that has continued.

Latest NFL mock draft continues to prioritize safety

When you read a mock draft, there is one thing to consider: how the writer approaches it. ESPN’s Peter Schrager does so from the premise of intel. His intel leads him to believe that the Vikings will select a safety, with the main target being Emmanuel McNeil-Warren of the Toledo Rockets.

McNeil-Warren is a tall, rangy safety who plays with high energy and is vocal in the defensive backfield. We’re still not sure if Harrison Smith will be back at 37 years old, but McNeil-Warren can be the torchbearer once Smith does choose to call it a career. He had five picks over the past three seasons.

Mock drafts throughout the industry continue to have the Vikings taking safety, with McNeil-Warren ranking third (47 selections) and Dillon Thieneman of the Oregon Ducks ranking first (117).

McNeil-Warren is a much better fit than Thieneman with his versatility, instincts, and ability to be a true center fielder. The versatility aspect is a major theme throughout Brian Flores’ defense, and that’s something Thieneman doesn’t have.

Will the Vikings draft a safety? That remains to be seen. It could be the direction for the Vikings, but it’s a very deep safety class. That scenario would make sense.
