Cleveland Browns have created quarterback controversy on Day 3 of the NFL Draft, and one name is likely getting pushed off the roster

The Cleveland Browns have made their decision to take a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. There’s a ripple impact here that likely lands a former draft pick off the team.

Quarterback controversy with the Cleveland Browns? That line has been said too many times, but it’s ringing true again today.

Entering the 2026 NFL Draft, it was up in the air whether or not the Browns would take a swing at another quarterback after drafting both Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders last season. If the Browns were going to do so, it made most sense for it to be on Day 3 in what is a weak quarterback class.

They’ve done it and the future of the position in Cleveland has a new layer.

The Browns’ selection of Arkansas QB Taylen Green is bad news for Dillon Gabriel

Browns head coach Todd Monken is connected to none of these quarterbacks as the new guy and he’s going to go with whoever gives him the best chance to win, but another layer is that he’s going to want his style of quarterback in the room. Gabriel was already the No. 3 quarterback at best for the Browns, and they just added a superb athlete at the position with a rocket launcher for an arm, albeit he’s very raw.

Cleveland used pick No. 182 overall of the sixth round on Green out of Arkansas and his athleticism speaks for itself with a 4.36 40-yard dash and 43.5-inch vertical jump at 6-foot-6, 227 pounds. Green is very intriguing with his blend of size, speed, and athleticism, but the question mark is below average accuracy and bad decision-making.

“You know, the quarterback position is the most important in sports. We’ll make a bet or acquire a player that we like if it’s at the right cost,” Browns GM Andrew Berry said after the pick. With Taylen specifically, very mature young man, really strong makeup, and he has rare physical gifts. He’s got size, he has elite speed. He has a big arm, you know. He’s gonna need some polish for this game, but he has the work ethic and acumen to do so. We’re looking forward to adding him to the roster and adding him into the mix in terms of competition.”

Green finished the 2025 season with 2,719 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions to go along with 777 rushing yards. He’s a true dual-threat quarterback, but the ability to lessen the turnovers will be a major part of whether he can make it in the NFL or not.

As far as Gabriel goes, I expect the Browns will carry him through training camp and hope to trade him if the possibility comes about. If not, the Browns are on track to cut last year’s third-round pick.
