Philadelphia Eagles bring legacy player to rookie minicamp — and it could be the solution to a growing problem
The Philadelphia Eagles may look to replace a long-time contributor this offseason, and the son of a former All-Pro may help them do it. Check out the latest.
Offseason storylines around the NFL are always interesting to keep an eye on, particularly when they involve a family bloodline. The Philadelphia Eagles are in the thick of precisely that following the latest report regarding the son of a former fan favorite.
David Akers’ son will tryout for Eagles during rookie minicamp
According to reports, Luke Akers, the son of David Akers, has accepted rookie minicamp invites from the Chicago Bears and Eagles.
His father kicked for the Eagles for over a decade from 1999-2010. He’s one of the most well-known kickers in team history.
David Akers was a six-time Pro Bowl selection, as well as a two-time first-team All-Pro. He is a member of the Eagles Hall of Fame. The boot also led the NFL in scoring twice during his pro career.
Luke Akers was the punter at Northwestern for the past three seasons after spending two seasons at UCLA to start his college career. The UDFA is open to both kicking and punting in the pros and would take an opportunity to do either. Akers averaged 42.9 yards per punt during his career between the two schools.
Potential Jake Elliott replacement
After a 93.8 FG made percentage in 2023, Elliott has struggled to the tune of a 77.8% and 74.1% mark over the past two years. Fans have grown a bit frustrated by his performances, and some are pushing for a new look at the position.
Elliott went 4/8 on attempts from 50+ yards last season, the worst FG percentage in the NFL among the 35 kickers who attempted at least 5 from that range in 2025. It is clear he’s not quite the boot he once was for Philly, and they may look to add some legit competition.
Akers is a player who may push Elliott to knock the rust off and perform in a more consistent manner. On the flip-side, the young kicker/punter may also prove he’s worthy of a shot as a starting kicker in today’s NFL.
We will see how it works out for the Eagles’ special teams unit, one that needs to take a step forward from last season.
