Notre Dame football took an extremely unconventional route toward finding the next great Fighting Irish quarterback
Notre Dame may have just found their life after CJ Carr. There is a legitimate argument that the Fighting Irish just landed an elite quarterback talent.
After gaining a commitment from top-100 2027 Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Prep defensive end Aidan O’Neal early on Friday, Notre Dame football continued its strong recruiting momentum later in the day. They were also able to land the commitment from Vero Beach (Fla.) High School signal caller Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV over Ohio State and Florida State.
Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish landing Monds was a masterful job. Not only is Monds a really talented football player with all the upside in the world, but they also took an unconventional route to find their 2027 signal caller. With a limited number of options on the board, Notre Dame had a smaller margin for error, and they got it done.
It wasn’t too long ago that Monds didn’t seem like the most likely target for the Irish. Originally a member of the 2028 recruiting class before reclassifying, Monds has been pursued by some of the top programs in all of college football. There was intrigue early, but until Monds visited South Bend a couple of weekends ago, it felt unlikely that Notre Dame would be able to land him.
The Irish staff was technically a little later to kick off this entire process, considering that Teddy Jarrard was originally their 2027 quarterback. After Jarrard reclassified and signed in the 2026 class with Notre Dame, it opened up the opportunity to find another talented signal caller. Monds, along with Kamden Lopati and Davin Davidson, were the three quarterbacks that Gino Guidugli and the staff decided to pursue.
Davidson ended up committing to Florida, while Lopati decided to flip his original commitment to Michigan. With Monds the only remaining uncommitted quarterback on the board, Notre Dame opted to remain patient and go all in on him. With their backs against the wall, the Irish staff was able to get it done with the momentum from this past visit.
When Monds arrives in South Bend, there is going to be a legitimate conversation about how long it’s been since Notre Dame has had a quarterback with this amount of raw talent. Carr was a better prospect coming out, at least for now, but the physical gifts are even at a higher level for Monds. Life after Carr will be different, but things will still be in a great place.
Monds’ recruiting background
Monds was previously a member of the 2028 recruiting class (where he was ranked as the top quarterback in the class) before reclassifying to 2027 recently.
Despite that jump, Monds is still rated as a four-star player on the 247 Sports Composite ranking. That rating has the Florida native pegged as the No. 264 overall player, the No. 20 quarterback, and the No. 24 player from the state of Florida for the 2027 recruiting class. As Monds showcases himself this offseason and next season, he feels like a safe bet to move up significantly in those rankings.
A long list of impressive programs has been pursuing Monds. The 6-2, 224-pound signal caller currently holds offers from the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, Florida State, Auburn, South Carolina, SMU, UNC, Illinois, Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State, Pitt, UCF, Baylor, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Purdue, West Virginia, and Northwestern, among others.
In five games in 2025, Monds flashed as the main backup to 2026 Florida State athlete signee Efrem White. He managed to complete 45 of 63 passes (71 percent) for 691 yards and seven touchdowns. Monds also scored a touchdown on the ground, while also not throwing an interception.
With a very talented Vero Beach team returning next season, you should expect the dynamic signal caller to put together a tremendous year.
