NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans shocked everyone drafting receiver Carnell Tate at in last month’s NFL Draft. The justification for Tate is simple to figure out.
He will be judged by how much he immediately helps quarterback Cam Ward.
Keep it simple, stupid
That phrase should be drilled into our collective consciousness more often.
“I would say like a receiver for the Titans is more valuable than a receiver for a team like the Giants who are picking right after them,” ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes said in a recent appearance on The Buck Reising Show. “Carnell Tate being a successful draft pick isn’t him being one of the best receivers in the NFL despite where he’s being picked. It’s him helping Cam Ward continue developing so that you as an organization feel good about the progression of your quarterback.”
It does not need to be more difficult than that.
Tate arrives in Nashville looking to make a difference for Tennessee’s passing attack. At 21, Tate was the most well-rounded player at his position. His timing and spatial awareness are excellent.
He immediately becomes the best route-runner on the roster.
“Just prove my worth and then just prove to the coaches they can trust me,” Tate said during rookie minicamp. “Getting up to the level of the older guys, the vets here. Just prove that I’m trustworthy to them as well.”
Easier said than done.
