New Commanders veteran is using his inside connection to recruit Super Bowl champion cornerback and 4-time Pro Bowl receiver

The Commanders still have some roster holes to fill after free agency and the draft and the recently-acquired Charles Omenihu is trying to help bridge a couple of the gaps with some accomplished veterans.

As we know, players and coaches form strong bonds in football. Especially in the NFL, where the “brotherhood” ideology is established in full.

Those connections can come in handy down the line. Whether it’s a player/coach looking for a new home or whatever scenario – oftentimes just knowing someone can get them a job.

Such is the case with Washington Commanders defensive end Charles Omenihu. On Wednesday, Omenihu publicly reached out to four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs on Instagram in hopes of persuading him to join the Commanders. Diggs was found not guilty on charges that involved felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery, clearing his name for the upcoming season.

He then shared the news regarding former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback and teammate, L’Jarius Sneed, who saw an aggravated assault charge get dropped to a misdemeanor on Wednesday, himself. Omenihu played with Sneed in 2023 and both were a part of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl squad, that year.

Both players come with risks, but can certainly help the Commanders

Let’s start with Sneed: The Commanders need a big corner that is adept in man coverage and Sneed was one of the best before injuries befell him in Tennessee. His knee is a big concern, but the Commanders could easily bring him in on a cheap, one-year prove-it deal laced with incentives. In return, they might just get a starting perimeter cornerback who can matchup with any receiver in the league. When healthy, of course.

Diggs is an older veteran, but showed he can still produce at a high level in 2025. I mean, the guy played around 55% of the offensive snaps in New England and still managed to snag 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns during the regular season. He also posted a career-best and very impressive 83.3% catch rate over the course of 17 starts.

Per Pro Football Focus, Diggs’ 2.42 yards per route run ranked fifth out of the 30 eligible wideouts with at least 98 regular season targets. That’s a better mark than guys named CeeDee Lamb, Ja’Marr Chase, George Pickens, Justin Jefferson, and A.J. Brown.

In other words: Diggs can not only produce, he can still produce at an efficient rate. The Commanders need a true No. 2 opposite Terry McLaurin and Diggs can definitely fit that bill.

It remains to be seen if the Commanders go after one or the other, but right now, Diggs is definitely the safer bet of the two. He can be a bit eccentric in terms of his personality and whatnot. Plus, you have to wonder how he views the Commanders in terms of where they’re at competition-wise.

Still, the idea makes a lot sense. Sneed, not so much, but at least there are ways to mitigate the risks contractually. Either way, sooner or later, we’ll find out if Omenihu’s tactics worked.
